Remembering African Wild Dogs

By Wildlife Photographers United

Foreword written by John Kamanga

Remembering African Wild Dogs is the sixth book in the Remembering Wildlife fundraising series:

Remembering African Wild Dogs is the sixth book in the celebrated Remembering Wildlife fundraising series, which has so far raised more than £1.28m GBP / $1.66m USD for conservation projects since it began in 2016. The aim of the creators is to make the most beautiful book ever seen on a species and to use that to raise awareness of the plight facing that animal and also funds to protect it. Each book is full of images generously donated by many of the world’s top wildlife photographers, with more than 80 contributing this year.

Of all the species we have featured in the Remembering Wildlife series so far, the African wild dog is perhaps the least well-known and certainly the animal that the fewest readers will have seen for themselves. And yet out there, across the sun-drenched plains, on the hilltops and deep in the rocky valleys, still run packs of this magical, almost mythical species. The question is, for how much longer?

Across Africa, these painted wolves (as they are also known) have historically been persecuted beyond measure, reduced from around 500,000 to roughly only 6,600 today. Their eradication has been intentional, often driven by fear and ignorance but also by simple human arrogance. Add to that the challenges of habitat loss and climate change, and the pressures they face seem almost insurmountable.

With this book, our aim is to inspire a reappraisal of this beautiful creature and through its sale, we aim to raise funds for those working passionately to protect it. We are supported in this mission by many of the world’s top wildlife photographers, who have all generously donated their work for this stunning collection of images. Together, we are determined to make a difference for the African wild dog, before time runs out and the last, haunting, hoo-call is lost forever.

The Remembering Wildlife series won Silver for Best Non-Fiction Book Series at 2024 IPPY Awards.
